Re: Little Halloween today!

That's a gorgeous church! You absolutely should go see it, and whatever family records are stored there.

Yes, I remember your story about Marie. Isn't it astonishing to think what some of our ancestors went through to get here?

Re: Little Halloween today!

A footnote: you can tour the homes in Natchez year-rp
Iund, but they have two "pilgrimage" seasons when they really put on the dog for tourists. One is mid-March to mid-April, and the other is October. We missed the spring pilgrimage by a couple of days. It involves local guides in period costumes ...

Re: Little Halloween today!

We checked into the Natchez Grand Hotel that evening, which is right on the river. You look across to Louisiana. We'd left the party the previous night with lots of food, so we stayed in our hotel room, nibbled our leftovers, and watched the Oscars. It stormed that night, but we slept through it ...

Re: Little Halloween today!

On Sunday morning we attended church downtown at St Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, where I'd grown up and sung in the children's choir, etc. It's across the street from the Governor's Mansion but not as old, of course. It's a neo-Gothic structure from the 1880s, but very beautiful. Although no one ...

Re: Little Halloween today!

Saturday night we attended the big party at my former teacher's house. More people showed up to it than to the dinner the night before, and some were from out of state, like me. Our former teacher left teaching a year or so after our class and went to law school, where she made good. Her house is in ...

Re: Little Halloween today!

Hey hey!

Sorry I've been AWOL. I hit the ground running last week when I got back, trying to get household routines back to the way I do them. Then this week I've had one medical exam after another, since my annual checks had to be deferred because of January's ice storm. I've got four in a row ...

Re: Little Halloween today!

Lol. You are so mean!

If I arrive early early enough I may be able to go out to dinner with my former classmates. We'll see.

Re: Catching up

Re my lengthy residency in two different states, yes, I have had much stability in my life, and I prefer it that way. But there was a time when that was far from true. Shortly after I moved to Staunton, VA, I was getting mail forwarded to me from Killeen, TX; Conyers, GA; and Richmond, VA, all of ...

Re: Catching up

Lol. Maybe I should try to reach out to them. Perhaps one of my half-sister's daughters could get me some copies of any photos she might have saved. It's a thought.

Re: Catching up

Houses can be really emotional, can't they? I imagine I'll drive my daughter past the house my mother built in 1972. I know it's still there. It will be strange to look at it from the outside, and to be on that old street. My parents at one point owned three properties next door to each other, and ...

Re: Catching up

I hope she enjoys it. I guess she must want to go, since I didn't ask her. She volunteered.

It's sad that my kids know so little about my early home(s). Besides spending the first 20 yrs of my life in Jackson, we spent every summer in my mother's home town of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. And we'd always ...

Re: Catching up

I'm not going anywhere. And, no, I haven't yet joined FB. But even if I do, I won't leave this place.

I am, however, planning a jaunt down to Mississippi on the weekend of the 13-17 (a longish weekend). It's a reunion for a specific high school advanced English class, and I've decided to extend it ...

Right now I'm not seeing images, but I often have to wait quite a while before they load.
