Weird Easter customs
Ok, so it's Holy Week, so I started googling around about Easter customs around the world. And I ran into this super-weird thing they do in Finland. Children dress as witches, paint their faces, and go door to door holding baskets and begging for chocolate candy. Usually they do this on Palm Sunday, but sometimes on Holy Saturday, too. Apparently it goes way back, to a time when the Finns believed witches were especially active before Easter. Sounds like ToTing, doesn't it? Has anyone else ever heard of this?

That's a new one to me , but I'm all for it.
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

It sounds like fun, but if they ever tried to introduce that tradition here it would probably result in another Salem witch trial for the kids.

Instead of using a store-bought kit I used the same boiling water and vinegar recipe, but used gel food coloring for the color.

Re: Weird Easter customs
Oh, wow, your eggs are gorgeous!
I cooked an artichoke & green onion quiche last night for the Easter brunch at church. This am we skipped the sunrise service but attended both 8:00 and 10:45 because the choir sang at both. We came home pretty tired and with zero plans for food, but my quiche, happily for me, proved unpopular at church, so I've been able to feed hungry folk with that.
Since Easter is a season, not just a day, I'll probably do deviled eggs tomorrow. I didn't dye any this year, but we got lots of church in, since the choir sang on Thurs and Fri, and had started the week with a double service for Palm Sunday. Tonight our Chicago son wants to watch a religious movie with us, probably Risen, because it's relatively short, and we both have access.
Happy Easter!

The Quiche sounds wonderful.I haven't made anything like that for years.Maybe I will use some of my leftover , unboiled eggs and see what I can whip up.
I've had 4 boiled eggs today.Typically , I like deviled eggs and egg excel sandwiches , very satisfying , very simple.
And of course , i've been grabbing handfuls of maple glazed ham , and just shoving them in my face , because ham is wonderful.
This is the time of year.I like to watch those old grand epic movies , lawrence of arabia , cleopatra and for easter specifically been hur and or the ten commandments.

Re: Weird Easter customs
We've got a fair number of those old epics and have watched both Ten Commandments and Ben Hur recently. Ben Hur is probably my favorite movie, ever, even though I've seen many great ones over my lifetime, and most of my other favorites are nothing like it. I saw it first run in theaters when I was maybe 4 and was just overwhelmed with it. But the funny thing is, at every age and stage of my life it's had something to say to me. I can't praise it enough.
