You guys are probably going to laugh at this, but I didn't get my license until about a month or two before my 30th birthday! I was born and raised in Staten Island, NY, and then lived in Manhattan for nearly seven years. After that, I lived in Pittsburgh for three years. When you have convenient access to public transit and taxis, there's no incentive to learn to drive. Besides that, I could never have afforded a car. I figured that when the day came that I'd have to learn, I would.

I meant to say 1976, not 1975. That's only one year after I got mine, but it's a long time to be driving. Both of us have nearly 40 years of Driving exp under out belts. Additionaly, I have almost 20 years of motorcycle driving experienc eo boot.
Sueluvs, my older sister FINALY got her drivers license when she was in her mid 40s. Like you, she lived a good part of her life in Washington DC, and also had a fear of driving that kept her out from behind the wheel until she moved to New Lenox in the mid 80s. She learned to drive, and then she moved down to St. Petersburg Florida.
She still drives, but God bless her, I love her, but she's a TERRIBLE DRIVER.

What is this "convenient access to public transit and taxis" of which you speak?

It means that I could walk to the corner and hail a cab or catch a bus, or only have to walk a few short blocks to the subway station. On the other hand there's "inconvienent" access, where people who live in suburbs can catch a bus or train into the city, but they have to drive to the station.

Before I was old enough to drive, I rode around on the CTA (Chicago Transit Ahtuiroth) busses all the time. When I was 14, I snuck off to the Ford City Shopping Center on the City Bus to see the movie "Earthquake" when it came out. My parents thought it was unsafe for kids to travel alone in the city, so I was not allowed to go to movies by myself.

My first drivers license was in autumn 1992, and I was only 17... I did have some bad records such as speeding, drinking and driving, opening alcohol containers, using illegal drugs while driving, reckless driving, and fleeing from an cop officer. hee hee hee
But now, I'm a good old driver!
Also, I've never been to jail.... but the judge gave me 6 months probation, and also, different kind of probations, you know? Because I'm very nice guy, not always!

One time, when I went before a Judge to see if I could get supervision for a speeding ticket, the price was a bit steep, so I said something derogatory, that can't be repeated here, to that judge. He gave me the supervision luckily, but I was fined a total fo 750 bucks for fines and "contempt of court.' The kicker is that I was old enough to know better. I was in my 30s, but I simply lost my temper.

ha, my license has been revoked for the past year and a half, I got until Feb. till I get it back. It sucks but I get rides from my friends so I have never had to take the bus. I'm a bad girl. LOL

Yeah thanks, it was because I didn't pay off the tickets that I had gotten and still kept driving. I also eluded the police, kinda like OJ but not as bad. LOL
