I don't get the channels (no cable), but I hear about shows like Honey Boo-boo (from Georgia, I believe), and Swamp People, set in Louisiana. I can just imagine the negative stereotypes those shows must perpetuate about us Southerners! But I sometimes think those people are just playing to the camera, because they want the $$ and, possibly, the fame. I bet they exaggerate every stereotypical aspect of their lives and personalities, just to give the producers what they want. I'm sure it's no different on Jersey Shore.

I decided long ago that "reality TV" is just as fictional as anything else on TV. The only thing that differentiates it is that they don't have a written script with lines to memorize. But they do have character "types" and crude plot lines that are set up by the producers. It is all lowest-common-denominator, like pro wrestling, because it is left to the imagination of the viewers to fill in the plot and conflict, with guidance from the producers of the show. Nothing about it is real.

I agree. I am a Southerner myself. Southerners do get stereotyped.

Murf those shows aren't giving the south much credit. I know there isn't much reality in "reality tv" though there's no getting around that the Jersey Shore characters are idiots(they are on the show after all plus things they've said off the show). My wife actually knows one of the moms from The Real Housewives of NJ since she taught some of her kids. The producers told them they had to go out shopping (which they didn't want to do) and made them have a fight. Honey Boo-Boo is a terrible show(I haven't seen Swamp People). I don't know different they are on vs off camera. Though they do fit the southerner stereotype to a T. I am sure there are people like that down south just as there are others like the Jersey Shore morons up here. However conversely as I know most people around here aren't like them I also know most southerners aren't like the people on the shows like Honey Boo-Boo. Television airs what they think people will watch. No one wants to watch "regular people" doing everyday things.

That's true, it's all for ratings. I suppose regular viewers like to feel superior to the idiots they are watching.
