New Disney Cruise ships update?

SO excited and cannot hardly wait! My husband is self-employed (mobile mechanic) and he says he is having to "flog" himself to get his work done! It is sugarbeet harvest here in Wyoming so he is keeping a bunch of older-than-the-hills trucks running for the farmers for one more year (some of these trucks are 4 trucks taken apart and put together to make one truck!) I got a new digital camcorder and have been practicing up! We have been to Europe before but never for this length of time. Unfortunately, the dollar is so bad it's taking a beating. Travel sites are warning about exchanging your dollars for Euros and no place in Rome will take dollars anymore. It is VERY expensive using taxis or shuttles. The train is fairly cheap but when you have a lot of luggage it is not very convenient (lots of bums and panhandlers too.) Train is safe and fast but not for everyone. I got an email yesterday that there are still unsold rooms on a 12 day coming from Barcelona to Florida and an interior room was 399.00! It was around Thanksgiving but I think you missed the big travel rush dates. Vacationstogo.com always has last minute unsold cruises. Mary

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had the latest update on the construction of the new Disney Cruise ships? Oh and anything on the names yet?

It is funny that you ask because today the Carnival Solstice sailed from the Meyer Dockyard in Papenburg. Reportedly it is the largest passenger ship ever constructed with room for nearly 3000 passengers (way too many in my opinion). Coincidentally, Meyer is the group building the two new Disney ships so they will no doubt be starting on another ship now that the Solstice has sailed – no doubt one of the other 4 ships for Carnival.

With the Magic and Wonder, plans were finalized in 1995 and it was April of 1997 (April 9th I think) when the two halves of the Magic were joined and it was July 1, of 1998 when the ship was completed and left Venice.

If the new ships follow similar schedules (except the 2 halves part), and the first is due July 2011, then plans should be finalized now and construction should be starting at the end of this year or early next. I have not seen any exact dates though.

The two new Disney ships will be named "Dream" and "Fantasy"

I saw that too! Good news!

Dream begins sailing in 2011 and Fantasy in 2012 and both will be sailing from Port Canaveral at least through 2014.

Robert A. Iger, Disney president and CEO said today (March 10, 2009):

"Last week, steel cutting began on our next two Disney cruise ships. Today I’m pleased to announce their names. The Disney Dream will set sail in 2011, while the Disney Fantasy will hit the high seas in 2012."

WOW. I didn’t see that yesterday, I will have to tell my kids. I think we had a contest going on what the names would be and I believe one of them said "Dreams". That’s cool.
