Pre-teens and teenagers exploring Disney Cruise on their own

SO excited and cannot hardly wait! My husband is self-employed (mobile mechanic) and he says he is having to "flog" himself to get his work done! It is sugarbeet harvest here in Wyoming so he is keeping a bunch of older-than-the-hills trucks running for the farmers for one more year (some of these trucks are 4 trucks taken apart and put together to make one truck!) I got a new digital camcorder and have been practicing up! We have been to Europe before but never for this length of time. Unfortunately, the dollar is so bad it's taking a beating. Travel sites are warning about exchanging your dollars for Euros and no place in Rome will take dollars anymore. It is VERY expensive using taxis or shuttles. The train is fairly cheap but when you have a lot of luggage it is not very convenient (lots of bums and panhandlers too.) Train is safe and fast but not for everyone. I got an email yesterday that there are still unsold rooms on a 12 day coming from Barcelona to Florida and an interior room was 399.00! It was around Thanksgiving but I think you missed the big travel rush dates. Vacationstogo.com always has last minute unsold cruises. Mary

I was wondering at what age is it ok to let kids explore the ship by themselves. I know Disney has many Children/Teenager activities scheduled but I didn’t know at what age it would be considered "safe" for kids (age 12, 11, and 10) to go to the arcade or get a snack without constant adult supervision.

I think 11 as long as they have rules and understand them and if they have taken the Babysitting course.

That should be fine. AS LONG AS the 10 year old realizes the 11 year old is in charge and listens to them.

I don’t know about that, that never seems to work out. In a perfect world, yes, but most kids will just fight about whose turn it is to be in charge. I think my 11 year old would be in charge of my younger two (who happen to be 10 and 8), if it were just the younger 2 kids then the 10 year old would be in charge. Of course that stinks for the 8 year old but that is just how it is. I don’t think I would send my 10 year old out, alone, with her 8 year old brother to explore the ship. That has disaster written all over it.

That sounds like disaster! No matter what always let the OLDEST child be in charge! Even if the age difference is small the oldest should always be in charge, no matter what the other children say,being in charge is the oldest’s right! If she/he isn’t there than the 2nd oldest is in charge and so forth.

I did not like the kids clubs. I think you should be 14 to be able to go out by yourself or with your friends. Sometimes 11 year olds think they know things but sometimes their judgement is not the best or fair. I wish the cruise had more kids club activities that were not mixed in with other age groups. I did not like being with the smaller kids and I am older than them.

I think the Kids Clubs sounds great but my kids did not like it. I know lots of other families who swear their kids wanted to stay at the Kids Camp the ENTIRE time but I did not find this to be true for my family. Of course, my kids did enjoy it if I was there to participate in the activities with them (Who Wants To Be A Mouseketeer and/or craft activities). I guess part of it was that I didn’t want the kids to be at a "day camp" while we were on vacation together, we wanted to be together and that’s why we chose the Disney Cruise Line. Sometimes I did need a little "break" but then I would rally and get my second wind. It was all so much fun but I just didn’t feel the Kids Club was fun for my kids.

I agree. We did our first cruise and they didn’t go at all. Our 2nd cruise, they wanted to try it, and tried it long enough for me to get back to the room before I was buzzed. They haven’t really wanted to go back since. It is more fun doing stuff with them anyway.

My 12 year old daughter went by herself to the teenage club the 2nd week of our back to back cruise. She had the best time and met a lot of people. Every day she was excited about the activities they had planned. The had to do a scavenger hunt with video cameras, talent show, masquerade ball, homecoming dance. She LOVED it. She met friends from England, California, all over the world. I was a little nervous the first night when she came back after 12 but she would check-in regularly and once I met everyone, I felt a lot better. She found a new independence on the ship and I think it helped her it not being so shy to meet new people. I can tell she is a little more confident when meeting new people, that has helped with starting Junior HIgh. My fears have been laid to rest…..
